Why You Should Attend
Changes to immigration law and practice in recent years have limited avenues for legal relief for many immigrants seeking protection from abuse, persecution, neglect and other harm in their home countries. These changes pose unique challenges and considerations for attorneys representing unaccompanied immigrant children (UCs) in removal proceedings. The government does not recognize a right to appointed counsel in immigration court proceedings—even for children—thus making the sharing of up-to-date information about children’s legal rights and options essential to zealous advocacy. This training provides key updates, practice considerations, and strategies for representing UCs living in California. Specifically, attorneys who work with immigrant youth, or pro bono attorneys interested in working on these issues, can learn about the most recent updates to Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), UC asylum claims, and immigration court practice, through a trauma informed and culturally responsive lens.
